On the hunt for some new makeup brushes that are not only great quality but also won’t break the bank? Well read on, because this review of Spectrum brushes is 100% positive, 100% girly and 100% pocket friendly! You may have seen some photos doing the rounds on Instagram, Facebook, etc of these beautiful brushes, I certainly did and they drew me right in! It was such a coincidence that the week I was planning to buy a few of them, the lovely Elena from Beauty Matters asked if I would like to try some brushes from the collection. Of course I jumped at the chance and she asked me to pick 3 brushes of my choice. I went for a flat top buffing brush, flat top buffing concealer brush and a large eyeshadow brush.
Before I go into detail about each brush can we just take a minute to gaze at how beautiful these brushes are! Seriously they would take pride and place on any vanity and the ombre bristles housed on a baby pink handle are so different to any I’ve seen or used before. The brushes are both vegan and cruelty free and still manage to be unbelievably soft to touch, I actually just sat there stroking the hairs when I first received them! These brushes were put through their paces with various different products from liquid foundation to powder and cream eyeshadow, and also have been washed many times before this review. I can can report back that not one bristle fell out during both makeup application and washing, which is something that can happen with some of the more affordable brushes. I’m glad to report that these babies were as good as new after each use and wash.
“In The Buff” Flat Top Buffing Brush €10.75
As soon as I seen this brush I had to try it as I use buffing brushes everyday to apply my foundation. As I mentioned above, these brushes are so unbelievably soft but this still managed to buff my foundation in beautifully. At first I wondered if it would actually be too soft, but the bristles are packed so tightly together that it gives a flawless finish and makes applying liquid foundation an absolute breeze. I think I’ll actually go and buy another one of these as a back up as I’ve been reaching for it over my Real Techniques Buffing Brush everyday!
“Under Cover” Buffing Concealer Brush €5.99
This type of brush was something I didn’t have in my collection; it’s basically a smaller version of the Flat Top Buffer. I’ve always found that when concealing any spots I’d go back to a flat top foundation brush to stipple product onto the area. To have a smaller version was just the brush I needed! Thankfully my skin has been really good to me the past while so I’d no major concealing to do but I found this great for applying under eye concealer and for finishing off around the nose area. It’s so handy and it’s one I use everyday after applying foundation. Love it!
“Full Colour” Stubby Shader €5.99
Although I’ve no shortage of eyeshadow brushes, I didn’t have one specifically large enough to pack on product; mostly just fluffy brushes. This one fits the bill perfectly as it’s the ideal size for adding a wash of colour to the lid for a neutral eye and also for packing on shadow for more intense looks. I tried this with both powder shadow and one of my Maybelline Colour Tattoos (which are quite tacky feeling at the best of times) and it was faultless; A great brush for my collection which will get plenty of use.
These brushes really exceeded my expectations and more. The 3 brushes altogether cost just under €23.00 and I pretty much use them everyday. If there was an expensive label on the handle I wouldn’t know the difference! The girls from Matte to Metallic use these part of their kit for makeup lessons and have had nothing but good reviews. Anyone that is starting out in makeup or just need a good starter kit of brushes, they have an impressive 10 Piece Essential Kit set for just €60.00 that includes everything that you need.
You can have a look at the Spectrum Collection on Beautymatters.ie or you can pop into Jen & Ciara’s studio in Glasnevin. I promise you won’t be disappointed! If you have already tried these brushes, let me know and also which ones to buy next! My eyes are on the Domed Powder and Contour brushes!
