I start off every month saying that I won’t purchase ANOTHER foundation, lord knows I certainly don’t need to buy more but this new one from L’Oreal got me all curious with the rave reviews it was getting. I’m a sucker for practical packaging and this sure does fit the bill. It’s like the sophisticated big sister of the L’Oreal family with it’s sleek matte plastic tube and minimalist looks. Definitely something that wouldn’t look out of place on a stand amongst the luxe brands in Brown Thomas!
The price: This is very affordable at €11.99 for 35ml (usual foundations are 30ml) so you get a good amount of product for your buck. There is also a specific primer marketed to go with this foundation, but to be honest its not needed. I explain more about that below.
The formula: I was expecting a thick mousse-like consistency from this and was really pleasantly surprised that it was beautifully creamy and blended easily. They state that it’s an “ultra-fluid emulsion with perlite technology” I love that the tube has a pointed nozzle that allows you to precisely use just the amount of product that you need and no mess afterwards. I really wish that more brands would take this type of packaging on board as it just makes life so much easier being able to pop it into your makeup bag and not worry about glass breaking. You can also get every last bit out by cutting the top of the tube off (a godsend if you run out before payday!)
The coverage: I’d say that this foundation is medium but easily build-able to full coverage. If you are a fan of sheer foundations, this might not be for you. In saying that, you won’t looked caked in this either. The formula is light to work with but highly pigmented to give a flawless finish and practically no need for concealer. I would still use some brightening concealer under my eyes, but elsewhere my acne scars and redness were covered to perfection.
How I apply: I very rarely apply foundation with my fingers. I just can’t be dealing with the mess and I just never seem to get the airbrushed finish that I want. To apply this foundation I use my round head kabuki by Nima Brush and it works like a dream! A close second to this would be the Real Techniques Buffing Brush (from the Core Collection) as both give a beautiful finish.
Who is it suitable for: Anyone with oily skin – this is made for you! But I found this worked for me too and I have dry skin with flakey patches from time to time. Once you exfoliate well and use plenty of moisturiser is will sit perfectly well on the skin. I have used this with both MAC Strobe Cream and the Boots Radiance Cream underneath. For drier skin types, this combination works a treat. I didn’t need a primer at all for it to stay put all day so if you already have a primer, you don’t need to buy the one that is marketed to go with this foundation.
Longevity: It says 24 hours but we all know we are not going to wear it for that long! I honestly got a full day from this with no touch ups – none! I wore it through heat and also a full shift at work and not a budge. It actually wore better than my beloved Estee Lauder Double Wear! While Double Wear foundation does last well, it tends to emphasis fine lines and looks / feels dry as the day goes on, L’Oreal 24hr felt very comfortable and looked as good as when it was first applied! This foundation also feels silky smooth on the skin and my pores looked more smoothed out – no product sinked into them throughout the day.
The verdict! A huge thumbs up from me! If I didn’t know this was a drugstore foundation, it would definitely in my eyes, pass as something 3 or 4 times the price! The only (small) letdown was that the shade range can run a little dark so it’s advisable to do some good swatches with the samples on the stand.
I’m using the shade Vanilla and for reference I am a MAC NC15 / Bourjois Healthy Mix “52” / Estée Lauder Double Wear “Ecru”. I found it the perfect match and not overly pink or yellow toned. I’d highly recommend you check this out – it’s really a fantastic product for the price!
Have you tried this foundation? If so I’d love to know you you got on!
