The one thing that we would all love above any makeup or cosmetics, is great skin. Once you get this right, everything else just falls into place. Your foundation looks and sits better and nothing beats that glowing “lit from within” skin. While a lot of things come into play such as our lifestyle choices and genetics, these 10 easy steps will help you achieve great skin in no time and they won’t break the bank!
1. Ditch the cleansing wipes and micellar water!
We all know that makeup wipes are a big no-no (expect after a big night out – then your ok!). Personally I’m not a fan of micellar water for cleansing. It’s perfectly fine as a pre-cleanse but all that pulling and tugging with cotton pads is doing your skin no favours.
2. Wash your washcloths!
I use a clean wash cloth each morning and evening (nothing beats the feeling of a warm wash cloth!) so I have a huge supply ready to go. I stock up every few months in Penneys and ditch them when they lose their softness.
3. Hold on to moisture
If you have dry skin, invest in a serum to use under your usual moisturiser and use morning and evening. You can spend as much or as little as you like. I am using the new Nivea Serum Pearls and it’s fantastic. Another favourite of mine is the Pure Hyaluronic Serum by Pestle & Mortar.
4. Exfoliate at least once a week
It’s important to exfoliate your skin at least once a week, twice if you have normal skin. Try to keep away from the harsh exfoliants and go for something a little more gentle. Ziaja do a great micro-exfoliant which has tiny beads that are not too scratchy on the skin. If, like myself you suffer from acne, you can try an exfoliating enzyme which just sits on the skin for a few minutes and washes off. Nimue do a very good one. There are also pads you can use to swipe over the skin daily and contain glycolic and lactic acid.
5. Change your pillow case!
Change your pillow case twice a week and use white ones if possible as they will show up any dirt or grime a lot easier! Again I stocked up with cheap ones from Penneys, but if you feel like splashing out, silk ones are great to stop your skin creasing and also taming that “bed head” hair you get in the morning!
6. Sleep elevated
If you suffer from the dreaded morning puffy eyes, try sleeping on two pillows if possible to stop fluids pooling around the eye area over night.
7. Water, water, water!
No need to elaborate here, I’m guilty of not drinking enough myself. I have started filling a 2 litre bottle and leaving it within reach for the day. I find it much easier than going to a water cooler or tap throughout the day.
8. Pamper your skin
Ideally we should be having facials every 6-8 weeks but they can be costly. Instead try use a good face mask once a week. I alternate between a clearing mask and hydrating mask. I find the Glam Glow Super Mud great for my acne as it deep cleans. A more pocket-friendly alternative is the Boots Clay mask which practically does the same thing! For hydration I use the Dermalogica Multivitamin Recovery Mask.
Personally I find having to put on a separate SPF along with moisturiser and foundation in the morning, a right pain. I tend to go towards day moisturisers that already contain some level of SPF. Olay and La Roche Posay do a great range that won’t break the bank.
10. Fake it!
When all else fails, fake that glow! There are so many great products out there that will perk up our skin in minutes and really brighten up our complexion. Some great ones are MAC Strobe Cream, Clarins Beauty Flash Balm and Boots Radiance Balm.
